Saint Fargeau Castle is 1000 years old. In 980, Héribert, Auxerre's bishop and king Hugues Capet's half-brother, built a fortified hunting lodge. From the 5th to the 15th century, the castle was owned by prestigious families: Lords of Toucy, de Bar, and Charles VII famous argentier, Jacques Coeur. From 1453, Antoine de Chabannes built on the grounds of the old fortress the present castle with its pentagonal shape, flanked with six large towers. In 1652, Anne-Marie Louise d'Orléans, the Grande Mademoiselle - first cousin of king Louis XIV - was exiled for five years because of her part in the the Fronde. She settled in Saint Fargeau Castle. She brought the architect Le Vau who, at Saint Fargeau Castle, produced one of the finest examples of French classical architecture.
