Guédelon: a real journey back in time
the water-powered flour mill
a real challenge in experimental archaeology
The craftsmen of Guédelon – carpenters, stonemasons, blacksmiths and others – have built, piece by piece, a medieval water-powered flour mill.
The result of a three-year collaboration with archaeologists from INRAP (the National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research), this mill has been reconstructed based on the archaeological remains of a 12th-century mill discovered at Thervay in the Jura.
a mill that produces flour every day
In keeping with the spirit of the castle, all the expertise employed in the construction of this mill is aimed at producing flour identical to that which would have been found in the Middle Ages. Situated a few hundred metres from the building site, in the heart of the forest, this is a genuine medieval mill, still in working order*, which we invite you to discover today!

a long-term partnership with Inrap
Building on this experience at the mill and the lessons learnt on both sides, we renewed our collaboration with Inrap in 2015 with the construction and commissioning of a lime kiln. How is this material – essential for the construction of any building in the Middle Ages – produced from limestone? The firing process in the lime kiln lasts 72 hours without interruption.

Guédelon is situated in the Yonne department, in the north-west of the Burgundy region, on the D955, between the villages of Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye and Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye.
2 hours south-east of Paris; 1 hour 45 minutes from Orléans; 2 hours from Dijon; 1 hour 20 minutes from Bourges.
